Hamburg is a climber. It has advanced up the Top West European Port Ranking into the third position and in the process left a respectable distance between itself and its nearest challenger, the port of Marseille.

As the Port of Hamburg itself points out, with 5.7% year on year growth it 'achieved the highest percentage growth on the northern European continent for cargo handling'.

It handled a total of 97.6m tonnes and its percentage share of general cargo handling rose from 57.6% in 2001 to 61.6% in 2002.
