MUMBAI: The search for a new police commissioner for Mumbai has already begun, with incumbent R.S. Sharma due to retire by November-end. The process of selection in Sharma's case - he replaced M.N. Singh as commissioner in January 2003 - had been so deeply mired in controversy that there was then open talk of the powerful post being auctioned.

Singh was so upset by these reports that he had issued a press release, calling on the government to uphold the dignity of the commissioner's office.
