I take extreme exception to your article "Totalitarian Medicine" (August 25th issue). I am a public school teacher, a sufferer of A.D.D., and parent of a child with A.D.D. First of all, A.D.D. was not renamed A.D.H.D. The latter includes hyperactivity while the former does not.

My wife, also a public school teacher, and I struggled about using Ritalin on our child. When she could not focus her attention at all, she was expressing very low self-esteem and depression. Once placed on the drug, her grades zoomed to A's. We discussed removing her from the drug for summer vacations and my child said, "Don't. I don't like myself without it."
