The artist Herman Wendelborg Hansen (1854-1924) was born in Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein. In 1877, drawn by tales of the American West, Hansen immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City for a year. He then moved to Chicago and enrolled in classes at the Art Institute of Chicago while he worked as a commercial artist. A commission from the Northwestern Railway to paint a series of advertisements gave him the opportunity to visit Montana, the Dakotas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
