Four fairs are being held in three countries this month. The first, a new event being held at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris from September 12 to 18, is called Le Salon du Collectionneur--Paris and is organized by the Syndicat National des Antiquaires. It is the brainchild of the syndicat's president, Christian Deydier, who felt there was a place for an event alternating with the Paris Biennale des Antiquaires. A loan exhibition entitled Five Centuries of Masterpieces of Chinese Cloisonne is on view.
The 20/21 British Art Fair, which takes place at the Commonwealth Institute in London from September 17 to 21, features a loan exhibition of one hundred self-portraits by British artists. They were collected by Ruth Borchard, a German-born English writer who died in 2000, and have not been seen before in public. The majority of the portraits were acquired between the late 1950s and the early 1970s and include many by the best-known names of that time, including Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Elisabeth Frink, Laurence Stephen Lowry, John Piper, and Stanley Spencer.
