Byline: CARDY Tom
Playwright Oscar Kightley gives Tom Cardy a giggle as he prepares his raggedy troupe of Samoan characters for rebirth as a television cartoon series.
ON STAGE, comedy troupe Naked Samoans have always been partly slapstick and their storylines a bit wacky. So is it really a surprise that the group are to be turned into TV cartoon characters next year?
"This series is based on the characters we created in the Naked Samoans and so it's very exciting. It's a whole new world. They'll live on in animated form. It's going to be massive," says an excited Oscar Kightley.
Kightley, who writes as well as performs in the stage shows, says the weekly half-hour cartoon series is to screen on TV3. He, and Naked Samoans regulars including Dave Fane, Mario Gaoa, Shimpal Lelisi and Robbie Magasiva are writing the scripts and will voice the characters. The cartoon will also include guest characters.
"When you create characters and stuff that comes out of your head, getting to do them on stage is one thing for a live audience. And then drawn up into animated figures that will move and talk and walk and laugh - and hopefully make other people laugh? As writers, it's a dream for us."
