Initial estimates of the damage caused by Hurricane Fabian in Bermuda predict that the total bill could come to more then $300m.
The category three hurricane hit the island on 5 September, causing extensive damage to buildings and destroying parts of the causeway linking the airport to the capital, Hamilton. Four people were swept into the sea when they tried to cross the causeway in cars. Only one body had been discovered as Reinsurance went to press.
More than 25,000 homes were left without power due to blown down electricity lines and many houses suffered a variety of structural damage, ranging from broken windows to torn off roofs and missing walls, from winds that gusted up to 120mph.
Bermuda-based (re)insurer Partner Re has estimated that it will have to pay out around $18m in claims due to hurricane damage. However, it said that it does not expect the loss to have a material impact on the company's results.
