Hurricane Isabel was nearing the coast of the US state of North Carolina as Reinsurance went to press.
According to predictions from the US National Hurricane Centre, Isabel was projected to pass through Virginia, into Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York, before passing into Canada. Its course could take it close to Washington DC, which has not been hit by a severe hurricane since 1953, when Hurricane Hazel made landfall.
Up to 100,000 people along the coasts of North Carolina and Virginia were being urged to evacuate their homes and move inland. The National Guard had been called out, with a state of emergency being declared in the two states, ...
