Hurricane Isabel was nearing the coast of the US state of North Carolina as Reinsurance went to press.
According to predictions from the US National Hurricane Centre, Isabel was projected to pass through Virginia, into Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York, before passing into Canada. Its course could take it close to Washington DC, which has not been hit by a severe hurricane since 1953, when Hurricane Hazel made landfall.
