The first sound that we hear in "Matchstick Men" is the soft lapping of water. The credits slide onto the screen against waves of blue. All of which makes it most peculiar that, in the course of almost two hours, nobody gets wet. The water is pool water, and the pool shimmers in the back yard of Roy (Nicolas Cage), waiting for swimmers who never come. The film was shot in Southern California, the director is Ridley Scott, and these early scenes, with their hurtfully strong colors, remind us that, long before "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down," Scott was the bright boy from the North of England who found his way to art school.
