Experts believe a mystery dust cloud which enveloped parts of the North-east yesterday was nothing more sinister than soil from local fields.

People all over the region - including Peterhead, Fraserburgh Inverurie and Aberdeen - all reported being showered with the fine, yellowish-brown substance.

It covered windows and gardens and was most noticeable on cars.

Many people discovered their vehicles had a thick sprinkling of the dust following heavy rain.

And they contacted Aberdeenshire Council's environmental health offices, fearing the powder could be toxic.
