The Sew Smart, $30, and the equally petite Sewing Genie, $40 (plus Sew Cute, $30, the Genie's pastel look-alike) weigh less than 2 pounds each. The machines operate with a transformer or with four AA batteries.
The Sew Smart promises to fix hems, mend tears, and work on fine silk or a heavy wool coat. "You can go from dull to dazzling," adding trims to linens, updating old jeans, and making decorative pillows. The Sewing Genie maintains that "even if you've never sewed a stitch, you can sew like a pro."
