Pioneering performance artist Laurie Anderson was preparing for a two-night engagement at New York's Town Hall when terrorists attacked and destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers on September 11, 2001. She went ahead with the show on the 19th and 20th of that month, though the ironic and amused detachment that has long been a hallmark of her performances was sorely tested. She opens, horribly, with a stilted and awkward speech in which she seems to be trying desperately to say something without actually saying anything: "We want to dedicate our music tonight to the great opportunity that we all have to begin to truly understand the events of the past few days, and to act upon them with courage and compassion as we make our plans to live in a completely new world."
