A graduate of the University of North Texas's legendary jazz program and an alumnus of such A-list ensembles as the Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band, the Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the small combos of Jack McDuff and Eddie Palmieri, saxophonist and composer Jim Snidero is no newcomer, though his profile as a leader remains relatively low. On his first album for the Milestone label he leads a quartet that also includes pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Paul Gill, and the great Billy Drummond on drums, as well as a ten-piece string section. Some jazz lovers react with an instinctive cringe when they see the word "strings" on an album cover, but those who generally feel that way should reserve judgment in this case.
