Brazilian musicology is not the sort of major industry that is supported by the wealth of educational institutions in the United States. The number of colleges and universities is much smaller, and their library and information resources much poorer than those of similar institutions outside the Third World. Nevertheless, important work has been done and is being dune in recovering the patrimony of Brazilian music from the colonial period and the nineteenth century. The Mariana Museum of Music, located in the Archiepiscopal Palace in Mariana, Minas Gerais (the wealthiest state in Brazil in colonial days), is the site of the Archive of Brazilian Music and sponsor of the project for the restoration and dissemination of scores. ...
