Leslie Troutman (1957-2003) spent her entire career as a music librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she was appointed to the library faculty in 1987. In her position as user services coordinator, she built a national reputation for the library's reference service, and she served as a mentor to dozens of music librarians who received their initial training from her at the library's information desk when they were students in Illinois's Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
She held many positions in MLA, and most recently completed a term as member-at-large (2000-2002) on the association's board of directors. During the 1990s, she served as chair of the Bibliographic Instruction Subcommittee (1991-93) and Reference and Public Services Committee (1994-96) before chairing the Program Committee for the 1997 annual meeting in New Orleans. From 1993 to 1995, she also was chair of the MLA Midwest Chapter.
