Three former high-ranking Merrill Lynch bankers were indicted on criminal charges for their role in helping failed energy giant Enron Corp. inflate its earnings, officials said.
The three were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and falsify records in the first indictments of Wall Street executives stemming from the Enron saga.
The charges stem from a 1999 scheme in which Merrill Lynch agreed to buy some Nigerian power-plant barges from Enron Corp. in an allegedly dummy transaction, according to the Justice Department.
