This article is loosely based on a speech called "Building Alliances through Communication" given to the Michigan ACE Network for Women Conference held at Michigan State University in June.

About a year ago, the University of Kentucky fired me. The day it happened I was incredulous. I was a successful, well-respected, well-connected senior administrator in the athletics department. The new athletics director said he wanted to make room for his own people. I appreciated his right to make that choice, but I couldn't believe he would fire ME. Like any organization, we had our weak links, and I wasn't one of them. Firing me just did not make any sense.
