The family of a sophomore who committed suicide two years ago at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is suing the school for $20 million, claiming that the university is responsible for the woman's death by failing to address her harassment by a classmate.
Julie Carpenter, 20, was stalked by a freshman in her dorm, according to the lawsuit. He slept outside of her room, broke into her computer, downloaded an intimate video of her and showed it to classmates, says the suit.
Carpenter filed a complaint with the resident hall committee in February 2001, charging Charvak Karpe with harassment, improper conduct and invasion of privacy. The committee decided Karpe could stay in the dorm if he stopped drinking, went to counseling and gave up his computer and his desk job. Carpenter was devastated by the decision to let him stay, according to the suit.
