With between half and two-thirds of faculty in U.S. colleges and universities set to retire within 10 years, now's the time to set new policies for their replacements.
With the help of a two-year, $484,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, The Office of Women in Higher Education (OWHE) at the American Council on Education will help leaders rethink and revise the current promotion and tenure cycle, to make it more flexible and family-friendly.
"This large turnover presents an opportunity to devise and implement new promotion and tenure policies designed to support faculty throughout their career and to benefit institutions in attracting and retaining a more diverse teaching force," said Claire Van Ummersen, OWHE director.
