Size counts when you choose a place to do your checking. A greater share of large institutions (38 percent) offer free checking than do medium-sized (31 percent) or small (29 percent) ones. But the bigs wallop you with higher fees on other transactions, according to a new Federal Reserve report (see below). Large institutions have assets in excess of $1 billion; mediums, from $100 million to $1 billion; and smalls, less than $100 million.

The bottom line: Unless you need an institution with hundreds of branches, shop for a small establishment that offers free checking.
