The new Nissan 350Z sports car is in showrooms after a five-year hiatus. Its arrival was eagerly awaited because of the Z's iconic ancestor, the Datsun 240Z, whose quickness and nimble handling shook the American car world back in 1970. The Z proved the advantages of light weight and modest dimensions in an era dominated by Chevrolet Camaros and Ford Mustangs.
Its power, weight, and complexity grew with the advent of the 260Z, 280Z, 280ZX, and the 300ZX of the mid-1980s, which was ungainly, expensive, and laden with gadgets. The 1990 300ZX was different--capable, quick, fun to drive--but that design was retired after five years.
