SEOUL, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's major electric home appliance makers are endeavoring to outdo each other in applying "green" technology, or environment-friendly technology, to their new products.
The nation's "big three" -- Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:05930), LG Electronics Inc. (KSE:66570) and Daewoo Electronics Corp. (KSE:09320) -- are competing to introduce environment-friendly household appliances, such as power-saving refrigerators, detergent-free automatic washers and air conditioners using coolant which does not damage the ozone layer, industry sources said Monday.
The three giants each obtained about 20 environmental defense fund (EDF) certificates last year and plan to win the EDF certificate, which is given to environment-friendly products, for all their appliance items within this year.
"Environmental regulations have been emerging as a new trade barrier to Korea's home appliance exporters. Green technology is the only way to overcome the obstacles," said Kim Ssang-su, vice chairman of LG Electronics.
LG Electronics seems to be taking the lead in environmental technology among the big three. It recently unveiled the world's first side-by-side two-door refrigerator featuring an environment-friendly linear compressor.
The new refrigerator named "Linear Side by Side" consumes 30 percent less electricity than conventional models and emits a sharply lower
amount of pollutants, company officials said.
