PYONGYANG, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - Calling the just-ended six-way talks in Beijing "useless," North Korea reiterated Saturday that it has no choice but to increase its nuclear power.
"(The six-way talks) reinforced the belief that we have no other option but to continue to strengthen nuclear deterrent power as a self-defense measure that ensures sovereignty," an unidentified Foreign Ministry official was quoted as saying in an interview with the (North) Korean Central News Agency.
The official claimed Pyongyang could not have interest or hope in the talks, describing them as useless and a gimmick for disarming North Korea.
"We once again confirmed that the U.S. does not have an intention to improve ties, shift its policy or seek peaceful coexistence, but is only in pursuit of disarming us," the official said.
Multilateral nuclear talks ended without a clear breakthrough Friday. All parties involved agreed to resolve the North's nuclear weapons program peacefully, hold the next meeting as early as possible and refrain from any action that might escalate tension over the dispute, according to officials.
The apparent shift in North Korea's position came hours after the United States hailed the outcome of the six-nation talks, saying progress was made toward a peaceful resolution of the standoff.
