SEOUL, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - U.S. computer chip giant Intel is set to open a high-tech research and development center by the end of this year in South Korea to boost its technology development capacity.
Intel chief executive officer Craig Barrett, who visited Seoul as part of a visit to the Asia-Pacific region, revealed the plan to President Roh Moo-hyun, the company's Korean unit said in a statement.
"Intel hopes to develop a convergence technology that merges computing, communications and digital content,'' the CEO was quoted as saying.
''South Korea is poised as an ideal place to open the research and development center for the convergence technology,'' he added.
As of end of July, South Korea had more than 10.5 million broadband Internet subscribers, hitting one of the world's highest rates of broadband penetration. The country's mobile phone population also stood at about 33 million people.
