SINCE the failed July 27 coup, a new wave of coup plot rumors has been sweeping over the country, driven mainly by unverified, if not unverifiable, information disseminated through the anonymity of text messages.

The rumor has not only rattled the already jittery market but also prompted President Macapagal-Arroyo to warn the nation that her government is determined to crush a new power grab. She said the government had the support of the armed forces and the bureaucracy.

Coup rumors are bad enough. But security authorities only made the situation worse by confirming there is such a plot, in their effort to reassure …
