About a year ago, SPJ's Diversity Committee, led by committee chair Sally Lehrman, published a "Rainbow Sourcebook," a database of sources for reporters who want to ensure diversity in their reporting.

Soon afterward, the idea surfaced to put together a teaching module that would support the sourcebook. I knew then that this was a project I should be involved in as the chair of a journalism department and as a faculty member of color.

But first, I had to settle a vexing question: What is a teaching module?

I'm still not sure I know the answer to that question. But I set out to put together a document that would help journalism professors …
