Age: 35 Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.

2003: Is 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in his first four starts after being released by the Angels and left a game Sunday after two innings with elbow stiffness. With Anaheim, he was 7-7 with a 5.63 ERA--not the numbers you want from a pitcher making $11.5 million this season.

Last year: Was 14-12 with a 3.92 ERA and did not miss a start for the world champions.

Throws: Slider, split-finger fastball and fastball.

Velocity: His fastball rarely reaches 90 mph. He throws his slider and splitter in the low to mid-80s.

Command (on a 140-10 scale): 6.

Strengths: He is one of those veterans who gets the most out of what he has. He knows how to keep hitters guessing, he fields his position well, though his range is limited by an off-balance delivery, and he is good at holding runners on.
