A prospective buyer of the Expos might get an even bonier version of the skeletal wild-card contender. Not only does the team face the possibility of losing potential free-agent outfielder Vladimir Guerrero. It also could lose general manager Omar Minaya.
Commissioner Bud Selig says he would not force Minaya to remain G.M. of the Major League Baseball-owned Expos by denying Minaya permission to interview with the Mets or Reds at the end of the season.
"I would never stand in Omar's way," Selig says.
Some in the industry had speculated that Selig would prevent Minaya from departing because prospective buyers want to keep him as the team's G.M. Selig, however, says he has yet to hear of such interest, and that the choice would be Minaya's.
"I don't wont to comment on the future," Minaya says. "We're in a pennant race."
