HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) today announced the award of $20.6 million this year to assist schools across the Commonwealth in providing safer, more productive learning environments.

The PDE received more than 600 applications for the 2003-2004 Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth grants this year, the most since the grants were started in 1995.

"If it is truly our goal to serve all schoolchildren, it is important that schools have the support and resources to reach all schoolchildren, including those in need of alternative teaching strategies," Secretary of Education Vicki L. Phillips said. "The programs funded with these grants serve all students by providing both prevention and intervention strategies that remove unnecessary distractions from the classroom and help children with problems get the education that may not be available otherwise."

Alternative education services in 333 school districts, 21 intermediate units, 15 charter schools, nine area vocational-technical schools, and three special program facilities will benefit from the $20,652,666 being dispersed in a wide variety of programs. Funds are awarded to eligible applicants on a proportional basis.

A listing of the awards is available online at: http://www.pde.state.pa.us/alt_disruptive/site/default.asp
