The average cost per adjusted discharge for U.S. hospitals increased 25 percent between 1997 and 2002, according to recent data. The question is, Why? This increase probably is due to many factors. The rising demand for inpatient services, the aging of the U.S. population, increasing case-mix severity, higher medical malpractice insurance payments, increased payroll and benefit expense, and shrinking payments are just a few.
