The usual notebooks, pens and pencils are not the only things parents are buying their children for school this year. A growing number of students will start classes Monday equipped with cellphones.
Leading cellphone dealer Yevroset said handsets and accessories are flying off the shelves.
"I see that a lot of these phones are being bought for school kids -- I would say as much as 10 percent," said Marina Isayeva, director of Yevroset's main branch, on Tverskaya Ulitsa.
She said handset sales jumped 20 percent late week, while sales of accessories grew 25 percent to 35 percent.
She said sales rose ahead of the last school year as well, but this time around parents are spending more.
"For many kids, this won't be their first phone, and parents are shelling out for more expensive models," Isayeva said.
