EASY access to bail is hampering the police's ability to stop crime bosses, PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde said today as he marked the end of his first year in the job.

Mr Orde said his "biggest concern" at present is the release of people accused of serious crime while they await trial - arguing that major criminals are continuing to prey on communities when they could be behind bars.

And he said new laws may be required to tighten up the conditions for bail.
