(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Byline: Conrado de Quiros
FINALLY, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has apologized to Acsa Ramirez. After repeatedly hugging the LandBank cashier in Malacanang, she said: "In behalf of the republic and the Filipino people, I wish to convey my deepest apologies for the inconvenience we have caused you. I can understand your anguish, but I had to wait (for the NBI to prove its case). At least one consolation is that it demonstrates the system works."
Ramirez herself accepted the President's apology after breaking into tears. "It's really important for me that my life returns to normal," she said.
So is this a case of all's well that ends well?
Not at all.
To begin with, the crafting of the President's apology merely compounds the original mistake. The original mistake was that GMA wrongly accused Acsa Ramirez of being a criminal. She did so while grandstanding about her apparent triumphs in fighting crime, presenting Ramirez in public as the culprit in the scam she exposed.
