WHEN a dog bites a person, very few people take notice. But when a person bites a dog, it's considered newsworthy. The same principle seems to apply if a dog is the subject of an obituary.
Last Aug. 7, the Inquirer published a notice on its Obituary section about the passing away of a canine named Dumb-Dumb. It was a first for the newspaper, so the advertising staff discussed the obituary before it allowed its publication.
I didn't realize the obituary would elicit varied reactions from the readers. Quite a number sent me letters and e-mails questioning its propriety. When a friend whom I haven't seen for quite some time asked me about it last week, I thought it would make a good subject for today's column.
