TWO days after Angelo Reyes resigned as defense secretary, the political air is thick with suggestions for his replacement.
One name is familiar: ex-President Fidel Ramos, who served as secretary of national defense under President Corazon Aquino.
Deputy Speaker for the Visayas Raul Gonzalez (NP, Iloilo City) said Ramos would make an ideal choice. "Only Ramos can unite the Armed Forces and he has proven this during his administration," he said.
Gonzalez was seconded by Rep. Abraham Mitra (LDP, Palawan), the son of Ramos' archrival in the 1992 elections, the late Speaker Ramon Mitra.
While Ramos may decline a Cabinet position because he had already served as the President, the young Mitra said, "he must give it a thought because his services may be needed now."
