FILIPINO Efren "Bata" Reyes opened his campaign in the World Pool Masters on a resounding note, beating Sweden's Tom Storm Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals at the Hotel Zuiderduin, in Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands.
Reyes, winner of the 1999 World Pool championship in Cardiff, Wales, defeated Storm, 8-3, in one of the first eight matches of the elite 16-man invitational tournament among the world's finest cue masters.
But Francisco "Django" Bustamante, the only other Filipino in the fold, was not as lucky, losing 6-8 to the host country's Nick Van Den Berg.
The 49-year-old Reyes thus arranged a quarterfinal showdown with 2002 World Pool and 1997 World Pool Masters champion Earl "The Pearl" Strickland of the United States.
The perennial favorite Strickland barged into the last-8 with an 8-5 victory over Niels "Terminator" Feijen of the Netherlands.
