Atlantic hurricane activity in 2003 will be slightly above average, according to the latest forecast from Tropical Storm Risk, a consortium of experts at the Benfield Hazard Research Centre. Researchers at the centre have lowered their previous forecasts and are now predicting 2.4 intense hurricanes this year, below the 10-year average of 3 intense hurricanes, but above the 30-year average of 2.1. There is also the chance that 1.5 hurricanes will achieve landfall on the US mainland, an increase on the 10 and 30-year average of 1.2.
