The explosion of women's and girls' sports will continue, following a letter from the Department of Education telling colleges and universities that its guidelines for complying with Title IX will not change.
Advocates of women's sports were delighted with the Education Department's reaffirmation of Title IX. "I think it's great," said Christine H.B. Grant, retired director of women's athletics at the University of Iowa and a leader in the fight to preserve Title IX. "Overall, the Department of Education is backing off entirely, and we've got to be really pleased."
"This is a huge victory for women and girls everywhere--and the men and boys who care about them," said Marcia D. Greenberger, co-president of the National Women's Law Center (NWLC). "We are relieved that the Department of Education heard and heeded the millions of voices in support of Title IX."
