The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) has appealed to its members to sign an Amnesty International petition to urge the Nigerian government to set aside the death penalty imposed on a woman for committing adultery. In a statement on Thursday, the Law Society said Amina Lawall was sentenced to death by a Sharia court for the crime of adultery in August 2002. The Nigerian Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence. She is to be buried up to her neck and stoned to death. Her death was postponed so she could continue to nurse her baby.
