The American Association of University Professors recently drafted new guidelines on how colleges should treat adjunct professors with several years of service to a school. The proposed guidelines go much further than previous ones in outlining paths to some job security and due process rights. They contain three main provisions:

* All part-timers have the right to written terms of appointment and a hearing if dismissed before term's end.

* Adjuncts who serve three or more terms within three years receive an appointment or non-reappointment letter no later than one month before the end of a ...
