Readers embraced our Aug. 11 cover story on Howard Dean's presidential run and were enthusiastic about the strides he's made. "Should Dean win the presidency, he will arrive there because of what he has accomplished," one said. "That's the best indicator of his worthiness for the highest office in the land." Another said that the Democrat is "a breath of clean Vermont air for a stale Democratic Party that appears to have lost its way." Should Karl Rove & Co. be worried? One reader thought so, writing, "Any candidate who can fire up the base of his party the way Dean has must be taken seriously." But not everyone spoke glowingly about the former Vermont governor. Commenting on Dean's opposition to the war in Iraq, a reader contended that "any Democrat who is not a stalwart defender of America's security doesn't have a prayer of making it into the White House."
