SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Most phone service was working late Thursday despite power outages throughout the East Coast, but companies said heavy traffic kept some calls from going through.
Cingular Wireless, however, had cell phone capability knocked out in parts of New York City, northern New Jersey, Detroit and Cleveland.
Cingular spokesman Clay Owen said the company's main switching operation, based in northern New Jersey, was running, but that some cell phone sites were not functioning due to the power outages. He said technicians were working to bring the sites back on line.
Verizon Communications had not experienced any network outages. Spokesman Eric Rabe said backup generators, powered by diesel fuel, had kicked in and were powering the company's more than 100 East Coast offices.
Rabe said callers might need to dial several times to get through due to heavy phone volume.
