GARETH SOUTHGATE faces an uphill battle to keep his international career alive until the Euro 2004 finals next summer.
That much seemed clear from the 24-man England squad named by Sven-Goran Eriksson for next week's friendly against Croatia at Portman Road.
For despite having started England's last qualifying game alongside Matthew Upson, Southgate found that the duo had both been left on the sidelines this time around. Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell both returned after injury, while Eriksson's two most promising defensive prospects - Jonathan Woodgate and John Terry - were also included.
