Every year, federal, state and local governmental agencies contract with private-sector vendors for goods and services. Annually, the total dollar amount of government contracts awarded to businesses and nonprofit organizations is multibillions. Receiving these lucrative contracts takes more than an offer to provide the requisite goods and services at the lowest price. Successful companies thoroughly understand the contracting process and, more important, are aware of those factors that provide a competitive advantage. Increasingly, government contracts are awarded to organizations that reserve a certain percentage of the total award for minority and women-owned businesses.
