From the modest semi-attached house where he spent his early childhood, Alexander Stoddart could get a good view of a roadside monument to Sir William Wallace--the Scottish insurgent these days better known as Braveheart, courtesy of Mel Gibson--just by looking out his parents' bedroom window. The house is in the village of Elderslie, now a Glasgow exurb, but in medieval times the site of the Wallace family estate.
