Despite the harsh climate and barren desert soil, the UAE's cultivated areas now spread over 2.7 million donums. According to Dr Saeed Mohammed Al Raqbani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, the farsightedness of the President, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his personal supervision of agriculture had resulted in the remarkable agriculture development witnessed by the country during the past decades.

"The UAE has made tangible accomplishments in the field of agricultural production and the volume of fruit and vegetable production has increased manifold," Raqbani said in an interview with the Arabic-language daily Akhbar Al Arab.

The minister said the number of date palm trees had now reached 40 million. …
