`Local ports to handle 10m TEUs this year'.

MALAYSIAN ports aim to handle 9.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containers this year, Transport Minister Datuk Chan Kong Choy said.

"I have told all the ports I don't want 9.9 million TEUs, but 10 million this year," Chan said in a press conference at his office in Putrajaya yesterday.

He added that local ports had given their assurance that they will work hard to achieve the target compared to 8.9 million TEUs last year.

On total TEUs handled till June this year, Chan said local ports handled 4,938,761 TEUs compared to 4,201,702 during the same period last year.
