There are many myths surrounding Dyslexia, but with the right

support and guidance, it needn't be a burden for students or

educators. Mark Phillips looks at the facts

Did you know that 7.8 per cent of learners in beauty therapy have dyslexia? Not a remarkable statistic in itself - until you consider it is twice the national average.

However, the shocking statistic was only unearthed by research carried out by the Hairdressing And Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA) in 1999. There are many myths and rumours surrounding dyslexia. Many educators are aware of the problem but are unsure how to address it, both in terms of identifying the condition in learners and in what support to offer them. Hardly surprising when there is little real knowledge of what dyslexia is.

So what is dyslexia, how can it be identified, and how can learners with the condition be given support?
