CANBERRA, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Australian industry could stand to make millions of dollars from involvement in the United States missile defence program, Defence Minister Robert Hill said today.
Senator Hill said that cooperation could be along the same lines as Australian involvement in the US Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.
"We expect the United States to offer similar industry opportunities to allies who invest in its missile defence program," he told a conference on the US alliance in Canberra today.
Australia agreed last year to join the US-led program to develop the high-tech Lockheed-Martin F-35 JSF as a likely replacement for the RAAF's ageing F/A-18 fighters and F-111 bombers from around the middle of the next decade.
Australia will invest up to $A226.83 million ($US150 million) in the JSF initial development phase. Already two local companies have won contracts worth several million dollars.
