Exports fell 2.0 per cent to US$7.31 billion, while imports surged 9.1 per cent to US$2.66 billion from a year earlier, the highest growth ever, the federation said.
That created a US$4.65 billion surplus in the six-month period, the lowest since 1993.
Exports in the first-half period in recent years sagged, falling 11.5 per cent in 2001 and 9.7 per cent in 2002.
